Otago sites celebrate new Landmark status

Two historically and culturally significant landmarks – Bannockburn Sluicings and the Otago Central Railway Trail have had their status elevated to Landmark status.

Landmarks Whenua Tohunga is a partnership between Manatū Taonga - Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai, and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. The programme provides a unified approach to promoting and encouraging people to visit New Zealand’s historically and culturally important places.

The programme aims to combine culture and heritage with beautiful natural settings to tell the tales of New Zealand’s past and connect visitors in a tangible way to New Zealand’s unique stories and places.

The Landmarks programme launched in Northland in 2016. The programme extended into the Otago region in December 2017 in partnership with papatipu runanka and local communities.
