RMLA Member alert: Progress report on MfE work streams

During this months’s meeting with the Ministry for the Environment, RMLA was updated on the MfE’s key work streams. The highlights are listed below and this page will be updated with further developments as information is available.

Proposed National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity

Public consultation on the proposed National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity (NPS-UDC) closed on 15 July. A total of 140 submissions were received during the six-week long consultation period, and are forming an important contribution to the finalisation of the national policy.

The proposed NPS-UDC is currently being finalised, with the intention that it becomes operative before the end of the year.

National Environment Standards consultation underway

The Ministry is consulting on amendments to the NES on Contaminated Soils and the Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL) from September 9 – October 14, 2016. MfE’s objective is to have amendments in place by late 2017.

National Policy Statement evaluations

Evaluations of the NPS for Renewable Energy Generation, the National Policy Statement (NPS) on Electricity Transmission and of the National Environmental Standards for Electricity Transmission Activities are underway.

Environment Canterbury

The Environment Canterbury Act was passed in May. Seven members of the new transitional governing body will be elected in October 2016 and up to six members will be appointed.

Resource Legislation Amendment Bill

The Resource Legislation Amendment Bill (RLAB) is currently in the Select Committee process. The report back from Select Committee is due 7 November. For updates, please click here to visit the relevant MfE page.
