2024 RMLA Moot Competition Winners Announced

Congratulations to the winners of the 2024 RMLA Moot Competition Alexander Sinclair and Olivia Sinnema of Cooper Rapley Law. Special recognition goes to their formidable opponents in the finals Emmalene Lake and Molly McDouall of Wynn Williams which took place this evening before Chief Environment Court Judge Kirkpatrick and Commissioner Janette Campbell.

It really was a very valuable experience as a junior solicitor, and in particular to get such detailed feedback from all of the judges along the way.

The moot, which focused on an application for an enforcement order in circumstances where an event company was breaching its resource consent for a Guy Fawkes event, was crafted to push participants' legal reasoning and advocacy skills. Both the Judge and Commissioner engaged in rigorous questioning, and all participants demonstrated exceptional performance under pressure.

I learnt how to better test my arguments and think on my feet to answer questions.

This professional development initiative, organized by RMLA, was open to all “young” RMLA members in their first five years of legal practice across the motu. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time and expertise to support the professional growth of these emerging legal professionals.

I learnt so much about my workmate and how we operate under pressure.
— Anonymous Semi Final Appellant

We extend our gratitude to the Round 1 and Semi-Final acting judges: Megan Exton, Joanna Beresford, Aidan Cameron, Maree Baker-Galloway, Daniel Minhinnick, Rosie Hill, Bal Matheson, and Derek Nolan KC. Additionally, thank you to our acting registrars for your support: Liam Stevens, Emma Burns, Georgia Moore, Poppy Lance, and Shamika Pujara.

Learning by doing - I now clearly see the difference in presenting oral submissions -v- preparing and drafting written submissions.

Thank you too for all the many teams that registered to be part of the competition from the start. Your enthusiasm, passion for learning and willingness to be challenged stands you all in good stead for your future success and we look forward to watching how that future unfolds for you all.

Lastly, a special thank you to Alice Balme for her leadership and dedication in driving this initiative forward.
