Resource management system reform

The first stage of RMA reform is a Bill proposing several discrete changes to the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). Drafting of the Bill is progressing, and MfE is working towards its introduction to Parliament soon.

You can submit on the Bill when it’s referred to a select committee.

The second stage will be a more comprehensive review of the resource management system. This review is intended to examine the broader and deeper changes we believe may be needed to support the transition to a more productive, sustainable and inclusive economy.

The Government is still determining the scope of the review to ensure it complements and works alongside other significant work programmes already underway.  We expect the second stage to begin later this year.
