New business units for MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has established 3 new business units – Biosecurity New Zealand, Fisheries New Zealand and New Zealand Food Safety.

The new business units provide increased focus on some of MPI's core responsibilities and align structure to Ministerial portfolios.

The business units are intended to lift the visibility of the valuable work we do in biosecurity, fisheries, forestry and food safety and increase transparency for our stakeholders and the public.

On 1 December 2017, Government issued a directive to create a stronger focus on MPI's core responsibilities. Four options for structural changes were considered and Cabinet decided that four new branded business units within MPI was the best option to achieve their objectives while minimising the cost and disruption to MPI.

A business unit for Forestry will be officially launched on 11 May 2018.
