Environment Court greenlights Wanaka water sports building

A controversial lakefront watersports facility has been approved by the Environment Court, subject to amended conditions, according to a report by stuff.

Judge John Hassan's decision said he disallowed the earlier appeal to the court by opposers, the Save Wanaka Lakefront Reserves Trust. The Trust had appealed last year's decision by Queenstown Lakes District Council commissioners to grant resource consent to the project.

Opposers, who contend that the building is significantly out of context with the natural settings of the lakefront reserve, are considering an appeal.

The court has drafted amended conditions and given the parties time to respond before issuing a final decision. This process will take at least 20 working days.
