On 31 July 2024 the esteemed annual RMLA Salmon Lecture is being held for the 24th time since the inaugural lecture was delivered by Hon. Peter Salmon KC in 2002.

The Hon. Peter Salmon is a retired High Court Judge who acted as an arbitrator, mediator and Resource Consent Commissioner and sat on Pacific Island Courts of Appeal. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he had extensive experience in local government, environmental and resource management law.  He practised as a barrister for 22 years and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1983. As  a Judge of the High Court he served from 1996 to 2004.  He co-reviewed the draft National Policy Statement on Electricity Reticulation, and was Chair of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance.

Sponsored by Russell McVeagh, this year’s guest lecturer is Paul Majurey.  Paul is renowned as an iwi leader, experienced governor and nationally recognised environmental and Treaty lawyer.  He has chaired three iwi collectives, comprising some 30 tribes.  He also chairs various statutory entities and companies, including Eke Panuku Development Auckland, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and Te Pūia Tāpapa (the Māori Investment Fund).  Paul has appeared as senior counsel before the Privy Council, Supreme Court and specialist environmental and Treaty courts.  He has also served on Ministerial technical advisory groups and is a co-author of the leading environmental law textbook, Environmental Law in New Zealand.  Paul is of Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Tamaterā (Marutūāhu) descent.
