Seeing the forest and the trees:  towards a valid and reliable method for the assessment of natural character 

The assessment of natural character, together with the assessment of landscape generally, remain problematic areas of landscape planning practice, particularly with respect to a general absence of theoretical foundations, and a failure to agree on valid and reliable methodology.

This presentation, held on 7 September 2016, from Nelson based Landscape Architect and Landscape Planner Dr Michael Steven discussed assessment issues arising from NZCPS Policy 13; and offered a succinct and valid definition of natural character; describing a robust method for the assessment of natural character that meets tests of validity and reliability.

Presenters were: Dr Mike Steven with panel discussion led by Rebecca Ryder (Boffa Miskell), Graeme Silver (WRC) and Dave Mansergh (Mansergh Graham).
