MBIE releases report into future of food and farming

MBIE has released a report identifying global megatrends likely to affect the future of food and farming and the implications for New Zealand’s science and innovation system.

The report was commissioned from Sapere Research Group and includes a review of international literature and interviews with international experts and New Zealand science providers.

The report identifies three international megatrends: enhanced environmental consciousness, new technological developments, and transformational science, and changing consumer preferences and other trends.

Dr. Marcos Pelenur, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Manager of Science Policy, says that MBIE will use these results to help inform science investment plans to contribute to a dynamic science system that enriches New Zealand.

“The report identifies megatrends that may shape the future of food and farming, and also any capacity and capability gaps in areas that will impact upon New Zealand’s ability to respond to these trends.”
