RMLA Webinar : Te Tangi a te Manu: Aotearoa New Zealand Landscape Assessment Guidelines

In mid-2021 Tuia Pito Ora / The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects unanimously adopted guidelines for landscape assessment in an Aotearoa / New Zealand statutory planning context.  Te Tangi a te Manu (‘The Guidelines’) have been undergoing final editing and graphic design and will be published in book and on-line formats in April 2022.

‘Te Tangi a te Manu’ is a milestone in landscape assessment guidance, both in New Zealand and internationally.  The Guidelines draw on the collective experience and knowledge of the profession, research of international guidelines, and a significant body of ‘case law’.  They will be a key reference for those working in resource management.

The RMLA roadshow will hear from the authors,  Landscape Architects Gavin Lister (Isthmus Group), Rachel de Lambert (Boffa Miskell), and Alan Titchener (Te Tau-a-Nuku / Ngā Aho Kāhui Whetū).  This presentation will be aimed at Resource Management Law Professionals and Planners.

The authors will provide an overview of:

  • The background and philosophical approach taken to the Guidelines;
  • Discussion on the research, the collaborative drafting with Te Tau a Nuku, and the extensive engagement within the landscape profession;
  • Te Ao Maori perspectives in landscape assessment;
  • The structure and key principles of the Guidelines;
  • Landscape assessment processes (what is landscape, assessing landscape character and values, assessing landscape effects, managing landscape outcomes);
  • A brief mention of topics relating to outstanding natural features and landscapes, and natural character; and
  • How the Guidelines will fit with the proposed resource management law reform.

Given the uncertainty of COVID it has been decided to host this event online in a Webinar format.

The presentation will be followed by a moderated Q & A session with the authors.
